The Six Big Questions in Strategic Management
These questions were developed to inspire and focus conversations between industry and academia that will evolve with the SMS community, the SMS’s scholarly publications, and the field of strategic management itself.
The Six Big Questions of Strategic Management identify pressing questions at the intersection of strategy scholarship and practice. They reflect issues of significant consequence to organizational leaders and areas where strategic management research can deepen understanding, inform decision-making, and contribute to better organizational outcomes.
The Big Six were developed through extensive engagement with SMS stakeholders. This process has included analysis of key issues identified by leading global consulting firms, SMS Board discussions of pressing questions at the intersection of theory and practice, input from SMS Interest Groups and Communities, consultation with global executives, and ongoing conversations with SMS members.
The questions are intended to inspire and focus inquiry and dialogue across scholarship and practice. For scholars, they highlight consequential strategic challenges where research can make an important contribution. For organizational leaders, they provide a framework for connecting the questions they face with relevant research, insights, frameworks, and tools.
The Big Six are not intended to define or limit the field of strategic management. Indeed, many concrete strategic issues sit at the intersection of two or more questions. Rather, they identify broad areas where scholarly inquiry and managerial relevance intersect. The questions are intentionally enduring, while the challenges and lines of inquiry within them will continue to evolve along with firms, their environments, and the field of strategic management.
